What to Sell Online

Making money online is pretty straight forward really. All money is made by presenting buyers with products or solutions. Millions of people are using the internet to search for what they want, it may be the answer to a question they have or the best gadget to solve their problem.

These days, if I am looking to buy a camera or a new dish washer or maybe a car, a house or apartment. I will usually start with checking out what is available online first. I will often look for some reviews so that I can become familiar with prices and what you can get for your money.

If you can put yourself into the mind of the buyer, you have a good chance of finding products or services that you could sell to those buyers. Of course, you could go ahead and buy the product from a wholesaler but these days you don’t have to. You can just as easily be an affiliate for the company who make what you wish to sell. In fact, with digital products or services, there is nothing to buy up front and no stock to hold. You just act as a middle man, finding the customers and making a commission in the process

Take Amazon for example. They have hundreds of thousands (or is it millions) of physical and digital products (like kindle books) for you to sell. All you have to do is create a website and put up some reviews and recommendations and, wah-lah, you start making sales.

I wish it was that easy, but of course it is not. It does take a lot more work to get your new website noticed, but the principle is correct, and many people are doing just that, with varying degrees of success.

One drawback with the previous suggestion is that the commissions are very small, so you need a lot of sales to make any real money. I prefer to stay away from Amazon and Ebay for that reason.

You can make much bigger commissions on sites like Clickbank and JVZoo who specialise in digital courses and software and services. With commissions at around 50% or 70% or even higher, it is much easier to make a profit from your efforts.

Having said that. There is a right and a wrong way to go about selling these products. The best way is to create a funnel in which you may offer a free gift or something very cheap in exchange for their email address. Then you can offer something that complements that gift or low cost product at a higher price.

This is what your local supermarket is doing when they advertise their weekly specials at a heavily discounted prices. They call that a “lost leader”. They make little or no profit on that item but of course, you are bound to buy other items at full price, while you are there. The idea is to get you in the door.

With the funnel, the idea is to get your email address first.  If you purchase the front end product, you will often be offered another, complementary product after that, and then another and another. Even if you leave without buying the up-sells, they can still offer them later, via email.

Whatever you think about this approach, it does work very well, and if you wish to make a good income online, this is one of the best ways to do it, whatever your product or service.
